Climate hypocrites: How Labour hid the truth about rising emissions

Hammersmith and Fulham Council has been caught red-handed manipulating climate data to hide an inconvenient truth: despite five years having passed post it’s declaration of a "climate emergency," the authority's actual emissions have soared.

The Labour-run council loves to trumpet its environmental credentials. It's won climate awards, earned A-ratings from environmental groups, and never misses an opportunity to pat itself on back for "cleaning dirty air." But scratch beneath the glossy press releases and a very different picture emerges.

While the council prominently displayed graphs showing modest reductions in direct emissions from its buildings and vehicles, it buried the bombshell: procurement emissions have doubled from 40,000 to over 80,000 tonnes since 2019 – completely wiping out any progress and then some.

The massive increase was relegated to a footnote and uncovered by our Shadow Cabinet Member for the Environment, Cllr Downer-Sanderson.

The hypocrisy is staggering. This is the same council that forces residents to pay emission-based parking charges, imposed controversial traffic restrictions, and lectures locals about their carbon footprints. Yet when it comes to their own pollution from construction projects and outsourced contracts, suddenly it's all "subject to some uncertainty" and blamed on "borough growth."
